It is a place of preserved nature, old mediterranean architercture and customs, delicias of the local cousine like “Komišku Pogaca” – pie made with olive oil, chopped onions, anchovies or sardines, olives, spices and tomatoes, quality wines like “Biševski Plavac” from the nearby island Biševo (meaning “hollowed”) which is a home of the famous Blue Cave, specific croatian-italian dialect, unique warmth and ambient which altogether make even those hard to impress to fall in love with Komiža and never again really part from it. Komiža is going back at least 850 years, some say even 2000. One theory is that the name Komiža, or Comissa in italian, means “near Issa”, Greek colony founded in the 4th century BC where today town Vis stands. Komiža has many pebble beaches, in the town alone there are more than 10! If you want privacy, there are more around. Nearby ones you can reach on foot, for farther ones you will need a kayak, boat, scooter or a car, all of which you can rent in local agencies.
